New X-Men: Apocalypse Photos and Covers Show a Closer Look at Mutants, Tease Intense Moments

The X-Men are about to face their most formidable adversary in the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse. While the group faced its share of menacing villains over the franchise's past six films, there's no preparing any powerful mutant for Apocalypse. The danger that the world's first mutant poses means not everyone could come out alive from the oncoming epic battle in the movie.

The moments before that major showdown is teased in a set of new photos and covers released by Entertainment Weekly.

Take a look:

Here's a close shot of En Sabah Nur/Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) already shown in previous promos.

Here's Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) leading the group of young yet brave and capable X-Men – Scott Summers/Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Peter/Quicksilver (Evan Peters), and Jean Grey (Sophie Turner)

Here's Professor Charles Xavier (James McAvoy) looking as if he's being protected by Alex Summers/Havok (Lucas Till) in a pretty intense scene.

Here's Sabah Nur/Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) and three of his Horsemen – Ororo Munroe/Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Angel (Ben Hardy), and Betsy Braddock/Psylocke (Olivia Munn). I'm guessing this scene with Apocalypse putting out his hand as if inviting someone means he's asking Magneto/Max Eisenhardt (Michael Fassbender) to join them, enough to complete his Four Horsemen.

Here's young Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), probably practicing her powers.

Apocalypse's plan of worldwide destruction has become a double-edged sword. Though it divided the X-Men, with Magneto joining his team, it also united the rest of the mutants who have become the original X-Men, including young Jean Grey (Sophie Turner), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), and Storm (Alexandra Shipp), all bent on stopping him and his plans.

In an interview with EW, director Bryan Singer explained the certain finality feel of the film:

It's kind of a conclusion of six films —X-Men 1,2,3, as well asFirst ClassandDays of Future Past— and yet a potential rebirth of younger, newer characters.
Even my father, who's 85, called me and said, ‘Is this the last one?' I said, ‘Well, it's not going to be the lastX-Men, I can promise you that, Dad.' But it does have a kind of conclusive aspect to it.

This certain finality certainly aligns with the movie being the end of the contract for the four leads – Jennifer Lawrence (Raven/Mystique), James McAvoy (Charles), Michael Fassbender (Erik/Magneto), and Nicholas Hoult (Hank/Beast).

This could mean that the movie might not end as happily as Days of Future Past, with every member alive. To this possibility, McAvoy said:

Even if this is the last one for me or for other people, you just are sort of grateful for the experience. I know I can speak for a lot of the other guys as well that it's been a really positive experience for us professionally and socially and personally.

From all the hype and what McAvoy and Singer has said, perhaps it can be likely that this movie would end with a bang, and we expect nothing less from an X-Men movie.

X-Men: Apocalypse hits theaters on May 27.
