New Star Wars Fan Theory Tries To Explain Why Luke Became A Jaded Hermit In TLJ

Star Wars: The Last Jedi might have enjoyed overwhelming commercial and critical success, however, not all fans enjoyed the sequel to The Force Awakens.

One of the film's main points of contention was the portrayal of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), with many fans feeling underwhelmed and disappointed that the once lawful good Star Wars hero would be turned into a jaded and broken hermit in The Last Jedi.

Now, a new fan theory on the internet (via Express) tries to explain Luke's decision to hide away on Ahch-To, defending the film. According to this new hypothesis, it makes sense why Luke would decide to withdraw from the Jedi because "he knew the same thing that Snoke did: ‘Darkness rises, and the light to meet it.'"

Apparently, Luke knew had to be put to an end because if the Jedi Master wouldn't shut himself away from the Force, then "Darkness would keep going as well."

While this new theory in itself is interesting and would help calm down the fans who're very much against seeing their hero other than the benevolent self they see him as it also does lessen the impact of The Last Jedi for those who took the film as is.

For other fans, Luke decided to withdraw from the Jedi because of the guilt that he felt after nearly attacking his own nephew, turning Ben Solo (Adam Driver) to the Dark Side. In The Last Jedi, fans get to see Luke at one of the lowest points of his life – not only has Luke's mistake turned him into a cynical hermit, but it's also broken him off with the Force. Then, at the film's climax, Luke decides to face his mistake by projecting his image to fight with Kylo Ren and be the hero that the Resistance needs him to be.

It's a powerful arc, and many consider Mark Hamill's performance in The Last Jedi one of the very best in his entire career.

How about you? What do you think of Luke's arc?
