The New Mutants' release has seen multiple delays over the years, with the film finally getting slated for April 2020, only to be delayed once again because of the coronavirus pandemic. It will finally see the light of day this August and is anticipated by fans because of its horror elements. However, there were actually some major cameos originally set for the film.

In an interview with SFX Magazine (via New Mutants Updates), Josh Boone confirmed that an early draft for the movie featured the mutants in the X-Mansion, along with James McAvoy's Professor Xavier and Alexandra Shipp's Storm. In addition, the New Mutants was supposedly in the X-Men: Apocalypse timeline, but was later dropped to be a standalone movie.

It would have been cool to see McAvoy and Shipp reprise their X-Men roles, the New Mutants in the ‘80s era of Apocalypse is intriguing as well. However, this just shows what a whirlwind the movie has been through in its production phase.

Dark Phoenix saw the final appearances of McAvoy and Shipp's characters. With the X-Men getting rebooted for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it is unlikely for them to make a return. While it would have been exciting to see the two in the film, some fans are delighted with the idea of New Mutants being a standalone film, which makes it different from the movies that came before it.

New Mutants is set to hit theaters on August 28, 2020.
