The late JRR Tolkien may have passed away a long time ago but his legacy continues through his works being read and adapted into films and TV shows. However, it looks like readers will finally get to enjoy some of Tolkien's never-before-seen essays in a new collection that will explore some unexpected parts of Middle-earth.
According to The Guardian, the Tolkien estate has authorized the new collection titled The Nature of Middle-earth which will feature several of Tolkien's essays about the world he created. The book, which will be published by HarperCollins, promises to "transport readers back to the world of The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales and The Lord of the Rings."
What can fans expect in The Nature of Middle-earth? The essays will reportedly include topics discussing "Elvish immortality and reincarnation," "the geography of the kingdom of Gondor," and an entry about who had beards in Middle-earth. The last one should finally settle the age-old debate on whether elves, hobbits, and dwarven women could grow beards.
Chris Smith, HarperCollins deputy publishing director, released a statement about the upcoming publication explaining that Tolkien never truly stopped writing about Middle-earth.
"For him, Middle-earth was part of an entire world to be explored," Smith said, "and the writings in The Nature of Middle-earth reveal the journeys that he took as he sought to better understand his unique creation."
We're loving the idea that we could once again learn more about Middle-earth straight from the man who created the world himself. Needless to say, we can't wait for this book to be published.
The Nature of Middle-earth will be released in June next year.
