There's a new Magic: The Gathering documentary coming from The Nacelle Company, the studio behind the popular Netflix series The Toys That Made Us and The Movies That Made Us, the studio announced. The project comes from the partnership between The Nacelle Company, Cavegirl Productions, and X-Ray Films.
"We're honored to be producing this documentary, which is sure to introduce the iconic game to a new audience while at the same time preserving its rich history," said Brian Volk-Weiss, CEO of The Nacelle Company in the press release.
Titled Igniting the Spark, The Story of Magic: The Gathering, will cover the "game's history, explosive growth, and enduring popularity." The documentary will be co-directed by Kelley Slagle (Of Dice and Men) and Brian Stillman (Plastic Galaxy: The Story of The Star Wars Toys).
"Magic: The Gathering is a classic success story, a homegrown game that came from nowhere and achieved worldwide success. It's brought joy to millions of people and along the way completely transformed the game industry. We can't wait to tell this story," the co-directors said.
They haven't talked about the specifics regarding what, exactly, the documentary will cover, but we expect a significant portion of its runtime will be focused on telling the story of how a mathematician named Richard Garfield created the popular collectible card game. Hopefully, it will also give us a behind-the-scenes look at the upcoming Magic: The Gathering animated series coming to Netflix, produced by the Avengers: Endgame directors, the Russo brothers.
Igniting the Spark, Magic: The Gathering will likely be released on Netflix, but no release date has been announced yet.
