New Exorcist Movie Trilogy Will Bring Back Original Star

It's official: The Exorcist is getting a new movie trilogy that will serve as a sequel to the horror classic and an original star is returning to face their demons all over again.

Late last year, there were reports that a new Exorcist movie is in the works with Halloween director David Gordon Green. However, it looks like Universal and Peacock have bigger plans for the sequel. The New York Times confirms that the studios are shelling out more than $400 million for a franchise which means two more films after the first one.

The report reveals that the project will star Hamilton actor Leslie Odom Jr. as the father of a possessed child. He calls on the help of Chris MacNeil, who will once again be played by Ellen Burstyn in the new movie.

Burstyn turned in a stunning performance in the original Exorcist film and it's great to know that she will be back in the new trilogy. For now, there are no updates on whether Linda Blair will also be returning as Chris' previously possessed daughter Regan MacNeil.

The Exorcist was released in 1973 and it became the first horror film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture. The film, which was directed by William Friedkin, won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sound.

The first movie in the new Exorcist trilogy is already set for a theatrical release on October 13, 2023. The next two films are then expected to stream exclusively on Peacock.
