Netflix's The Witcher Almost Had Ciri as the Show's Protagonist

Netflix's The Witcher is going to be debuting next week and fans are pretty pumped to see the adventures of Geralt, along with sometimes lover Yennefer and child companion Ciri. The show is going to deviate from the books a bit by introducing the two characters earlier than usual but it seems that Netflix was willing to make more changes.

During an interview with Netflix UK, showrunner Lauren Hissrich revealed that she originally had plans to make Ciri the focal character of this series. Over time, she realized that there just wasn't of good old Geralt so she relented and decided to keep the protagonist we know and love over a little twist in the narrative.

I actually started with that narrative structure, which is to have Ciri be our focal character and be kind of our narrator. The problem was I realized as I started writing that version that I wasn't getting enough of Geralt and his perspective, because it was all being told through Ciri.

That doesn't mean we won't be getting any Ciri-centric episodes since any Witcher fan will tell you how important she is to the book's/game's narrative. So don't fret guys, we're sure that Ciri will get a ton of love throughout the shows first season, or it's confirmed second one should there not be enough time.

While it would have been nice to see Ciri as the lead character, we're sure that Henry Cavill's Geralt will do well in that role. Fans loved him in the video games and we're hoping that Cavill is up to the task. This series is based on a lot of good stories from the books and video games so here's hoping the show is just as intriguing.

The Witcher is coming to Netflix on December 20.
