Netflix's Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac Trailer Criticized For Gender-Swapping a Character

When fans found out Netflix was rebooting the Saint Seiya anime, they were mildly interested since the show is pretty old and is ripe for a retelling. The first trailer recently came out, called Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac and fans are pretty pissed about a character's gender being swapped. These aren't your typical alt-right rants where they claim that men are being persecuted though; it's about replacing a male character who showed that being sensitive and peaceful were fine traits.

The character whose gender was swapped is Shun, who was easily the most powerful Knight from the core five and never wanted to resort to violence. That doesn't mean he never fought, as the character would fight if it meant protecting his friends. It was a positive representation of a sensitive male and we could still use more of that in media.

Here is a great thread from Tales of Nothing co-creator Fanny Rodriguez, on why this is a bad move. She brings up a lot of great points and it's nice knowing that Rodriguez is going to give the show a chance.

It will be interesting seeing if the show itself is good since the animation for the said show is pretty decent for something that's full CGI. Sure, it's not as good as something like Voltron but the show actually looks fine.

Saint Seiya: Knights of the Zodiac will come to Netflix on summer 2019.
