Rei Ayanami, a fan-favorite character, is voiced by Megumi Hayashibara, an experienced voice actor with roles such as Ai Haibara from Detective Conan Case Closed and Anna from Shaman King (2021).

The latter is rather surprising if you first heard Hayashibara as Rei, and it shows her amazing range, as Rei is very timid and quiet while Anna is loud and assertive.

Kaworu might have only appeared for a short while, but his sweet and calming energy made a lasting impact on the collective memory of Neon Genesis Evangelion fans.

Depending on how you read his actions, he might be the character that actually makes Neon Genesis Evangelion an LGBTQ+ anime.

Kaworu is voiced by Akira Ishida. While he didn't have that much dialogue, given that he only appeared briefly towards the end of the anime, his impact on LGBTQ+ fans can't be denied.

There was even an outrage when his words were watered down in Netflix's newer subtitles.

Meanwhile, Ishida has also been the voice of Takeuchi in Mars Red.

One great aspect of Neon Genesis Evangelion is that despite its surface coming-of-age journey, it treats its adult characters equally as seriously.

Many similar works focus disproportionately on young characters, which makes sense given the target demographic of many shonen anime.

But the adults in Neon Genesis Evangelion are really presented as people - they have sad and interesting storylines and moments in the show that are entirely their own.

  • Misato is portrayed by Kotono Mitsuishi who was also the voice of Usagi Tsukino in Sailor Moon Crystal.
  • Ritsuko Asagi's voice actor is Yuriko Yamaguchi who is also in One Piece: Red as Nico Robin.
  • Gendo Ikari's voice actor is Fumihiko Tachiki. He will soon appear as Kenpachi Zaraki in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War.
  • Ryoji Kaji is voiced by Kouichi Yamadera who will also appear as Quilge Opie in Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War

The original Japanese cast of Neon Genesis Evangelion is really iconic, but this isn't to say that the English cast isn't great too!

In English, Shinji is voiced by Spencer Spice (Marth from Fire Emblem). While Asuka is voiced by Tiffany Grant (Kudryavka Noumi from Little Busters), Misato is portrayed by Allison Keith (Leele from Choujuushin Gravion), and Rei is voiced by Amanda Winn Lee (Yukiko Amagi from Persona 4 the Animation: No One is Alone).
