The new season picked up after the explosion in the season 18 finale. The team searched for Gibbs (Harmon) after the wreckage from his boat. They later learned that he was tracking a serial killer with journalist Macie Warren (Pam Dawber)

Dawber returned on the first episode. But many were wondering where Gibbs was?

Harmon will still be part of NCIS Season 19, but he will have a smaller role, CaterMatt reported. He will still be part of the ongoing NCIS story but may not appear in every episode.

According to Parade, the explosion is most likely a ploy for Gibbs to pretend that he is dead. In that way, he can track the killer down without getting killed.

The outlet pointed out that the serial killer was aware that Gibbs and Marcie were onto him. Thus, the explosion and Gibbs pretending he is dead will be at his advantage.

There were several cast changes in NCIS Season 18. The only original cast that remained on the series were Harmon and David McCallum (Dr. Donald 'Ducky' Mallard).

Harmon has been the team leader since day one. It's difficult for many to imagine that another character will replace him. However, the series lead actor, himself, believed that everyone on the show is replaceable.

"I really believe this, but I think anybody on the show is replaceable," he told James Corden in 2015. "The truth is this show births characters leaving, it always has…It's not my choice [that] I'm number one but I think anybody is replaceable, I believe that."

In 2019, Harmon shared the possible event that would move him to leave the series. According to him, he would exit NCIS if the writers would no longer have any idea to write about his character. However, at the time, he made it clear that he still had no plans to walk away from the show.

"I've always thought if there's ever a time where the writers are walking into the room and going ‘I don't know what to do,' then I think we all have to look at each other and call it a day," Hamon told People. "But we're not there yet."

NCIS Season 19 premiered Monday on CBS.
