Mulan Boycott Reignited After Live-Action Film's Release on Disney+

It has been a truly long wait but fans can finally watch Mulan, thanks to the film's digital release on Disney+. However, it looks like the movie is once again facing backlash and it has nothing to do with what happens in the live-action reboot of the animated classic. People have decided to reignite the boycott of the remake that originated when actress Liu Yifei voiced her support for Hong Kong police last year.

Back in August 2019, Liu made headlines after a surprising post on the Chinese social media app Weibo. "I support the Hong Kong police. You can all attack me now. What a shame for Hong Kong," Liu wrote. The post immediately led to the hashtag #BoycottMulan to trend on Twitter.

Although this all happened in 2019, people have once again started trending it again after Hong Kong activist Joshua Hong reminded everyone about Liu's stand.

"This film is released today," Wong wrote on Friday. "But because Disney kowtows to Beijing, and because Liu Yifei openly and proudly endorses police brutality in Hong Kong, I urge everyone who believes in human rights to #BoycottMulan."

For now, it is unclear if Disney is taking action over the return of the hashtag. Although it was trending on Twitter during the weekend, it appears to have died down since then. In the meantime, Mulan is still available when you purchase the Premiere Access on Disney+.
