MTG Head Designer Explains How The Simple Guilds of Ravnica Mistake Slipped Through

Wizards of the Coast

When Wizards of the Coast revealed the Invert/Invent card from the upcoming Magic: The Gathering set Guilds of Ravnica, fans were quick to notice the mistake on the card: it's missing the clause "until end of turn" on the Invert side. Earlier today, it was announced that the card is getting a day-zero errata because of the error. This made us wonder how a simple mistake like that managed to slip through.

Now, Magic Head Designer Mark Rosewater has some answers. When a fan asked Rosewater how a mistake like Invert happened, Rosewater took it to his Blogatog to explain.

"The mistake isn't no one thought to write 'until end of turn' on it. The card had that text for most of its existence," Rosewater wrote. "During one of the many back and forth between R&D and CAPS (the department who gets the cards printed), it accidentally got removed and it didn't get noticed."

"There are a lot of moving parts to making a Magic card," he added. "And when you're focused on the most recent changes, it's possible to miss an accidental change."

It's still hard to believe how a big company like Wizards of the Coast managed to let that slip but accidents happen. It sounds like there was a lack of communication between R&D and CAPS so they missed seeing Invert.

Guilds of Ravnica will feature five guilds: Selesnya (green-white), Boros (red-white), Golgari (black-green), Izzet (blue-red), and Dimir (blue-black).

The following set, Ravnica Allegiance will feature the other five guilds: Azorius (blue-white), Rakdos (black-red), Gruul (red-green), Simic (green-blue), and Orzhov (black-white).

Guilds of Ravnica will be released on October 5. Prerelease events will take place on September 29-30.
