Mortal Kombat Movie: What Happened to Kano's Eye Plate?

Mortal Kombat fans are understandably hyped up about the upcoming reboot. However, the first images from the new adaptation also have people wondering about certain changes. For instance, fans are trying to figure out what happened to Kano's trademark eye plate.

Entertainment Weekly recently revealed the first photo of the Mortal Kombat reboot's version of Kano. Played by Australian actor Josh Lawson, the character appears to have significant facial scars and a laser eye. However, this Kano doesn't have the eye plate that has been his trademark in the games and it could mean that the movie is changing his story.

Why Does Kano Need The Eye Plate?

In the Mortal Kombat games, Kano was introduced as the leader of the Black Dragon crime cartel and Sonya Blade's archenemy. He is known for several modifications including a cybernetic heart, a laser eye, and a shiny eye plate. Kano needs the eye plate due to a disfiguring injury caused by Jax before the events of the game series.

Kano's eye plate is his best-known trademark and has been featured in previous film adaptations. However, there is a possibility that the reboot is giving the character an upgrade.

What Happened to Kano's Eye Plate in the Mortal Kombat Reboot?

There are several theories on what happened to the eye plate. Some believe that the photo of Kano isn't his final form in the film. Meanwhile, others think that the villain's story has been changed and he will be working for the good guys in the reboot.

Perhaps the most plausible theory is the one suggesting that Kano's eye plate is now under his skin and will be revealed in one of the movie's fight sequences. Needless to say, this is the one possibility we like the most.

Mortal Kombat will premiere in selected theaters and on HBO Max on April 16.
