The COVID-19 pandemic has led to many films pushing back their release dates for either several months or a year. It has been frustrating for the audience who have been looking to see the films. Fortunately, some of them have already been released and somehow do well at the box office despite the current environment while there are some that are still waiting to be released in theaters.

One of the films that the audience has been looking forward to seeing is Sony's Morbius which will be the introduction of the titular Spider-Man villain played by Jared Leto in Sony's Spider-Man Universe. However, according to Deadline, the film's release date has now been delayed yet again to April 1, 2022. It was previously scheduled to be released this coming January 28.

According to Deadline's report, one of the motivating factors that led to Sony's decision to delay the release is the continuing success of Spider-Man: No Way Home which is expected to continue doing more big business. Although it is widely believed by many that the actual reason for the delay is due to the rising cases of the Omicron variant around the world which has resulted in some markets closing down their theaters or lowering the capacity.

This is already the seventh release date delay of Morbius ever since it was first scheduled to be released back in July 2020. Of course, understandably so, the pandemic led to the multiple release date changes and, now, it will be almost two years since the original release date and three years since they shot the film.

It is not surprising to hear that the release date has been delayed yet again given the recent surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in relation to the Omicron variant, which is described as more transmissible than any other variants before. Considering that some theatrical markets are either closing down or lowering their capacity, it does lose the studio the opportunity to maximize their potential to earn a lot at the box office so it's better for them to delay to a later date assuming that the situation will be better by that time. Hopefully, this will be the last delay that the film will ever have so that we can finally see it in spring.
