Sony's new addition to their Spider-Verse anti-hero slate premiered last week, introducing Jared Leto's the living vampire, Morbius which grossed over $39.1 Million on the box-office opening weekend. Despite the film's disheartening reviews, the viewers seem to love Jared Leto's debut in Sony’s expanding Spider-Verse.

After going through multiple delays due to issues with production and the COVID-19 Pandemic, Morbius was finally slated for this year, following MCU's Spiderman: No Way Home. Morbius stars Jared Leto as Michael Morbius, a brilliant scientist with a rare blood condition who accidentally infects himself with a form of vampirism. Morbius develops superhuman abilities but also a curse for human blood.

Pre-screenings of Morbius were met with discouraging reviews, and some critics labeled the film "as bad as you were expecting," pointing to the film's lackluster CGI and confusing plot. Much worse, the film's post-credits scene featuring Michael Keaton's Vulture from Spiderman: Homecoming wasn't also embraced by the viewers.

Now, the man behind the film, Daniel Espinosa finally breaks his silence on the film's discouraging reviews.

In an interview with Insider, Morbius director Daniel Espinosa finally responds to the negative comments being thrown into his film.

Espinosa explained, "When I did my first feature it was a small movie called Babylon Disease I remember one day going home on the subway and I had a few drinks so I was a bit drunk. Someone nudged me on the train and said, 'I have to tell you what's wrong with the second scene in your feature,' and I was like, 'Well, okay.' The point I'm making is that it's a strange thing to make something that is so public... look, I have a lot of self-hatred so I have a lot of criticism of my own work. I'm always trying to focus on being better. But I am also proud of what I do. There are parts in all of my movies that I'm really proud of."

Fortunately, Morbius is currently defying the negativity at the box office and viewers seem to love the film compared to the critics. Sony predicted $50 Million in its opening weekend and the film grossed over $39 Million, which wasn't bad at all after all the negativity that the film went through prior to its premiere.

These box office receipts are so vital to the film’s future sequels. Since the film is doing well after its release, looks like Morbius has a bright future ahead and will still be included in Sony’s expanding Spiderman universe.

Morbius is now showing in theaters worldwide.
