Moon Knight Star Didn't Know She was Auditioning to Play a Hippo

Moon Knight has given us a lot of surprising moments for a few weeks now but the biggest one would have to be the talking hippopotamus who turned out to be a goddess. However, fans were not the only ones who were surprised to see a friendly hippo in the Marvel Cinematic Universe series. Antonia Salib, who played Taweret in the show, had no idea she auditioned to play the unusual goddess!

Taweret was introduced in the fourth episode where she only appeared in the final moment to greet Steven Grant and Marc Spector. We finally get to see and learn more about the Egyptian goddess in Episode 5. She was a truly unexpected character in the series and not surprisingly, Antonia Salib confirmed that she was kept in the dark about her role.

“[The character] was a complete surprise. I knew I was auditioning for Marvel Studios and I knew it was for a lead — an Egyptian woman. They kind of gave me a fake name, and they had a dummy script. it was only once I was about to meet the director, and the casting team, they just mentioned, ‘By the way, you're going to be a CGI hippo.’ I was like ‘OK, sounds great, let's do it!’” Salib told Marvel.com.

We're not surprised that Marvel kept the character a secret from everyone, even the actor who plays Taweret. Still, it was an awesome move considering that nobody expected to see a talking hippo in Moon Knight. For those who were wondering, Taweret is the Egyptian goddess of mothers and children who guides souls through Duat and helps them reach the Field of Reeds.

Moon Knight Episode 6 has not yet been given an official title. However, the sixth episode of the MCU series is already expected to premiere on Disney+ on May 4, 2022.
