Monsterverse Franchise Poised to Continue after Godzilla X Kong Runaway Success

The early figures have come in for Legendary's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. How do these numbers translate into the MonsterVerse's future?

With $361.1 million earned in just ten days after Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’s release date, the studio execs believe there is much potential for more MonsterVerse. Despite these figures, Legendary's top ranks want to see the latest film's full performance before deciding.

“We are in a good position to continue the journey, but let’s see how Godzilla x Kong unfolds,” Legendary's head for worldwide production, Mary Parent, pointed out. If the film continues to perform well, it could pave the way for more sequels, spin-offs, or even a shared universe with other iconic monsters.

However, the executive couldn't help but express her excitement at the early box office earnings for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

“These are early days, but we are certainly feeling good,” she said.

The new film could be considered the second entry in a trilogy within the MonsterVerse, with 2021’s Godzilla vs Kong as the first instalment. Adam Wingard, the director of the first two films, confirmed last month that he is open to creating a third film featuring the two iconic Titans.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Wingard said that the worlds of Godzilla and Kong possess “plenty of untapped areas” that he or other directors could explore.

The director also admitted to feeling the “seduction” of being able to create a trilogy, from which he is only one Godzilla x Kong film away from having.

However, if the project shifts the reins to another director, Wingard doesn't see it as a problem. He said that he considers the MonsterVerse a film property that any other director can enter with their distinctive styles and visuals.
