Alex Pina (the creator of Money Heist) had teased numerous times of the possibility of expanding further into the characters introduced in the main thriller series.

Before Berlin was officially announced, Pina told Oprah Daily he was open to a Money Heist spin-off, saying:

“We do have many possibilities for some spinoffs, yes, and I think that’s thanks to the strong and powerful identities of the characters. We’ve always looked for characters to have a very complex, layered design. So I think almost every character of Money Heist has a duality that we would like to see in a spinoff. We could watch any of them in other contexts.”

In late November 2021, just days before Season 5 part 2 premiered on Netflix, the streaming giant officially announced the Money Heist spin-off. Alongside the announcement, a brief teaser for Berlin was shared (translated to English):

“We already met Berlin in#LaCasaDePapeland now is the time for Andrés de Fonollosa. We can already announce that in 2023 the spin off of his life will arrive.”

Alonso, who last played Berlin for the final season's flashback scenes, said this about the spin-off (via TVLine):

“I’m so happy about it. I am deeply grateful to be able to connect with people all over the world and receive so much love and such a memorable time.We started this series walking into the unknown and we have been winning ever since. You fans are our accomplices and thank you for that.”

Alex Pina, who struck an overall deal with Netflix back in July 2018 and renewed that deal in March 2022, will return to write the series. The Money Heist creator will be working through his production company Vancouver Media.

Pina hasn't shared any major details for the upcoming Money Heist spin-off, but you can expect it to heavily focus Pedro Alonso's role as Andrés de Fonollosa (Berlin). Since his character died in Money Heist, the spin-off will be set before the events of the main series.

Despite his backstory being explored in the final season of the main series, there's still a lot we don't know about Berlin. In the series, Berlin described his relationships as the "5 times that he believed in love.” It was revealed that Berlin has 5 ex-wives, including Tatiana (played by Diana Gómez)

The spin-off could feature Berlin's early years with his brother, Sergio Marquina a.k.a. The Professor (played by Alvaro Morte). Money Heist didn't reveal much about their father dying or how he met Palermo, Bogotá, and Marsella.

The spin-off could also show more of Berlin's battle with Helmer’s Myopathy, and the heist he did in Champs-Élysées, Paris where he robbed 434 diamonds.

During the Tudum 2022 virtual event, Pedro Alonso talked to Alex Pina about Money Heist: Berlin, which sounds like it'll have a similar tone and style as the other Money Heist titles.

Of course, Pedro Alonso will reprise his Money Heist role as the hedonistic, intelligent jewel thief Andrés de Fonollosa, aka Berlin, in the spin-off.

Alongside Alonso, his new team includes Michelle Jenner (Isabel) as Keila, an electronics specialist; Tristán Ulloa (Fariña) as Berlin’s confidant and philanthropic professor Damián; Begoña Vargas (Welcome to Eden) as the instable Cameron; Julio Peña Fernández (Through My Window) as the devoted Roi; and Joel Sánchez as Bruce, a relentless man of action.

On May 31, Money Heist creator Alex Pina shared a photo of Berlin's script with the caption: “Berlin is already beginning to take shape". The script's cover page features the text :“Paris, my love, Vol. 1”, which might be the title of the upcoming spin-off.

This makes sense given that prior to the heist at the Royal Mint of Spain and his death, Berlin's backstory revolved around his days in Paris, glimpses of which we saw via flashbacks in the second season of Money Heist and beyond.
