Jonathan Groff is probably best known today for his work on Netflix's Mindhunter, but more people probably recognize his voice as that of Frozen's loveable idiot Kristoff. What's interesting is that Groff seems to be stepping into a whole bigger worldāthe world of the Matrix that is.
As per Collider, Groff has been cast in the upcoming Matrix 4. We don't have many details on who Groff is playing yet, but with the distinct eeriness of his voice from Mindhunter, I think he could be the next Agent Smith in a way. Then again, I could see him being a scruffy human in the āreal world' as well.
Groff joins a cast that includes franchise newcomers like Neil Patrick Harris, Jessica Henwick, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. We don't have any details on their roles either, but it seems that Abdul-Mateen is the new lead of the franchise, taking a role that could have been Michael B. Jordan's. I have to say, Abdul-Mateen is definitely landing a lot of great roles lately, from Aquaman to Watchmen, and now The Matrix. With him landing the lead in this film, it's likely to catapult him into A-List star status.
As for returning Matrix vets, the movie will also include Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith.
While we don't have an official synopsis at this point, I think it's very likely that we're getting a sequel/reboot, a story that focuses on a new cast, but features characters from the original to "pass the torch." Star Wars did it, and every other franchise seems to be following suit.
No release date has been set for The Matrix 4. You can catch Groff in Frozen II which is in theaters now.
