Will Poulter has certainly gone a long way from playing the dorky kid from We're the Millers. After starring in films like Midsommar as well as Black Mirror's Bandersnatch, he's now set to be part of Amazon's extension of Middle-Earth lore.
According to Variety, Poulter has been cast as one of the leads in the upcoming Lord of the Rings series. We don't have any more specifics on what the role is, but at least we know that Poulter will at least have a major part.
While we could expect Poulter to play a human in the show, his very distinct facial features could land him something like an elf or an orc. I'd say he could also be a dwarf, but I would suspect the showrunners would want people to know it's Poulter in the part (dwarf actors usually need a lot of make-up and prosthetics).
We don't have an official plot for The Lord of the Rings, but it's said to be taking place during the Second Age of Middle-Earth. Based on the lore, the Second Age is said to be characterized by the rise of Sauron as well the creation of the Ringwraiths; this was also the same time that the One Ring was said to have been forged. The end of the Second Age was marked by the defeat of Sauron's army by the Last Alliance of Elves and Men—this starting the Third Age, as well as the story for the Lord of the Rings films.
No release date has been set for Amazon's Lord of the Rings yet, but some are suspecting it to air sometime late 2020.
