Meghan Markle recounted the first time she met Prince William and Kate Middleton in Harry & Meghan. However, according to her, it was very formal, and some felt that her remark was an attack on the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Meghan Markle Shares' Formal' First Meeting With Prince William And Kate Middleton

The Duchess of Sussex got candid about her first encounter with the Prince and Princess of Wales in her and Prince Harry's documentary Harry & Meghan. The former Suits star admitted that she was surprised at how formal the royal family was even behind closed doors. She admitted that she was not aware of it and greeted Prince William and Kate Middleton barefoot and in ripped jeans.

"I was a hugger and have always been a hugger. I didn't realize that that was really jarring for a lot of Brits," Markle said, referencing her first meeting with her sister-in-law Middleton, Page Six reported. "I guess I started to understand very quickly that the formality on the outside carried through on the inside."

"There is a forward-facing way of being, and then you close the door and you are like, 'Oh, great. We can relax now.' But that formality carries over on both sides. And that was surprising to me," she continued.

"It's so funny when I look back now because now I know so much, so glad I didn't then because I could just authentically be myself without so much preparedness."

Meghan Markle Taking Swipe At Kate Middleton And Prince William Reportedly Backfired

Royal correspondent and commentator Jonathan Sacerdoti reacted to Markle's statement about the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The royal expert noted that it was a "shocker" what Markle said about the royal family being "formal" even behind closed doors.

"Who would've thought? I think the idea that formality would've extended behind the scenes, I guess that's possible," Sacerdoti told Us Weekly (via Express).

The outlet noted that Markle's remarks about the Waleses may have backfired because, according to Sacerdoti, the British public preferred the way Prince William and Middleton behaved.

"Maybe William and Catherine are a bit formal but I read a thing this morning that said most people prefer the British stiff upper lip to the weak, trembling bottom lip of these two," Sacerdoti said.

"They always seem to be bobbing and crying about the strangest of things. When you meet your partner's family for the first time, and they're not necessarily as into hugging as you are, so what? Who cares? Why are we listening to these sorts of whinges?"

"It's almost as bad as when we had to hear about their little squabble about bridesmaids dresses at that multi-million-pound wedding that we all paid for with our tax money."

Sacerdoti added that Markle's complaints don't resonate with everyday people. So, the public is unlikely to be sympathetic to them with their whinges.
