When the former first joined the royal family, royal fans immediately assumed that she would be best friends with Prince William’s wife. But after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex quit The Firm in 2020, author Omid Scobie confirmed that Markle and Middleton didn’t have much in common.
Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton Talked About The Struggles Of Sleeping While At Wimbledon
In 2018, Meghan Markle and Kate Middleton attended Wimbledon together. This served as the first time that the sisters-in-law attended an event without the other members of the royal family. Everything seemed to be going well between them as they watched two matches during their outing.
Photos of Markle and Middleton were also released online following Wimbledon. And clips were also shown to royal fans. A lip reader claimed to have deciphered a conversation between the two women.
“It makes such a difference if you’re trying to get a good night’s sleep,” Middleton reportedly told Markle at the time.
To which the Duchess of Sussex replied, “I tried to, it doesn’t take much, the question is does it work with the children?”
At the time, the Duchess of Cambridge had just given birth to her third child, Prince Louis, months earlier. Markle, on the other hand, has yet to become a mom back then.
According to Cheat Sheet, Prince William and Prince Harry’s wives talked about the struggles of getting a good night’s sleep after having a baby. And Markle must have only experienced the exact same struggle after she had Archie in 2019 and Lilibet in 2021.

Meghan Markle Suggests Her Relationship With Kate Middleton Is Not What It Seems
Meanwhile, the Suits alum also referenced her first solo outing with Middleton at Wimbledon during her interview with Oprah Winfrey. The host asked Markle if she felt welcomed by everyone when she first joined the royal family.
“Did you feel welcomed by everyone? It seemed like you and Kate at the Wimbledon game where you were going to watch a friend play tennis — was it what it looked like? You are two sisters-in-law out there in the world, getting to know each other. Was she helping you, embracing you into the family, helping you adjust?” Winfrey asked.
The Duchess of Sussex revealed that everyone welcomed her when she first joined the royal family. However, this doesn’t mean that everything that the royal fans see is what’s accurate.
“And, yeah, I know you say, ‘Was it what it looked like?’ My understanding and my experience for the past four years are that it’s nothing like what it looks like. It’s nothing like what it looks like,” she said.
Meghan Markle, Kate Middleton’s Relationship Didn’t Progress
In the book Finding Freedom, authors Scobie and Carolyn Durand revealed that Markle and Middleton’s relationship struggled to move past the distant politeness phase.
“The two duchesses’ relationship had struggled to move past the distant politeness of when they first met. Their cordial but distant rapport was apparent when the pair appeared alongside each other at the King Power Royal Charity Polo Day the previous summer,” they wrote (via Harper’s Bazaar).
At the time, Markle and Middleton stepped out in support of their husbands at the polo match. They stayed a few inches away from each other, but they barely spoke during the outing.
“While the doting mothers were photographed next to each other with their children, the two appeared to barely exchange a word. The state of affairs between the two women was just an offshoot of the real issue at hand: the conflict between Harry and the institution,” the source said.
As of writing, it’s still unclear if Markle and Middleton’s relationship has already improved.
