Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's names came up when Britons were asked about the tumultuous year of the royal family. Some were happy that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex left the firm while others sympathized with them and were relieved about their exit.
Meghan Markle And Prince Harry Subjected To Britons' Fury
GB News interviewed the Britons near Buckingham Palace to share their opinions about Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and the royal family's tumultuous year.
"It has certainly been a turbulent year for the Royal Family, but what was your most memorable moment?" Alastair Stewart asked in his program A Royal Year 2021.
"Meghan and Harry, ooph," one replied per Express. "It's mainly bad. Just everything surrounding them, the bad press, the bad publicity, all of it. It is just poor."
"I think they have disgraced the Royal Family and the further away they are the better," another added.
"There was no interaction," a different user said. "Meghan would just speak and say things, and it showed clearly afterward that there were a lot of inaccuracies in what she said."
While some slammed the couple, a number also supported them. Others even sympathized with them, especially after what they revealed in their interview with Oprah Winfrey. Prince Harry said that they were not supported by the royals. Markle also said that she was suicidal when they were still in the U.K. that's why they decided to leave.
"Meghan coming out and telling us what she went through in the family," one said. "Coming from a minority background myself, that kind of stayed with me."
Meghan Markle And Prince Harry's Popularity In The UK Drops
There is no doubt that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are still popular worldwide. However, their favorability ratings in his home country have dropped since their interview with Oprah Winfrey.
According to YouGov poll's in March, 48% of the 1,664 respondents had a negative attitude toward Prince Harry and 58% felt the same toward his wife.
In November, Prince Harry's favorability tracker remains low, with 48% giving him a thumbs up and 47% viewing him negatively. He had a net score of 1 and his favorability score was 19 points lower than in March.
Meanwhile, Markle received 59% unfavorable opinion and a 33% approval rating. Her net favorability score was -26.
Royal commentator Robert Jobson speculated that the duchess might not return to the U.K. after she and Prince Harry stepped away from their royal duties and settled in California.
"I’m not sure Meghan will ever come to Britain again," Jobson told Us Weekly Tuesday. "She’s not popular [right] now."
