Meghan Markle and King Charles III used to have a sweet bond when she joined the royal family upon marrying Prince Harry in 2018. However, everything went down the drain when the Sussexes stepped down as senior royals in 2020 and started making allegations against the royals and the monarchy since.

King Charles Used to be Fond of Meghan Markle

A Buckingham Palace source told Us Weekly in 2018 that the monarch was “very much looking forward to welcoming” the former actress as a new addition to the royal family.

“There is a real growing affection between Charles, [Queen Consort] Camilla and Meghan, which of course extends to Doria [Ragland, her mother] too,” the insider.

His Majesty even gave the Suits star a nickname, Tungsten, alluding to her toughness. He was even touched when Meghan asked him to walk her down the aisle.

The Start of the Fallout

But amid their growing relationship, King Charles and Meghan’s relationship hit a rough patch after the Sussexes decided to take a step back from their senior royal roles.

A different source told Us in January 2020 that the king was “livid” with his youngest son over the decision.

Prince Harry then alleged in an interview with CBS in March 2021 that his father had financially cut them off and stopped speaking to them.

King Charles Hints at Reconciliation with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle

In his September 2022 speech as the new monarch, King Charles gave a subtle nod to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

“I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas,” he said.

Royal expert Gareth Russell told Us then that the king had just made it clear that he wanted to heal the rift between them.

“The king, even when he was Prince of Wales, I think has made it very clear that he would, he would like a better relationship with the Duke of Sussex,” he continued. “So, let’s hope that the olive branch is something that works.”

Before Harry & Meghan officially dropped in December 2022, a source told Us that Prince Harry and Meghan wanted to “soften” their coverage of King Charles after Queen Elizabeth died in September 2022.

In Harry & Meghan, Meghan described her father-in-law and recalled how she asked her to walk her down the aisle.

“Harry's dad is very charming. And ... I said to him, like, ‘I’ve lost my dad in this.’ So, him as my father-in-law was really important to me,” she said. “I asked him to walk me down the aisle, and he said yes. The whole thing was surreal. It was at that moment I could also see H.”
