There is no doubt that Sam Wilson taking the Captain America title is one of the most highly anticipated developments for the Falcon’s heroic journey. However, this sets unrealistic expectations and unbelievable pressure on taking the mantle from Steve Rogers. Anthony Mackie opens up on whether he thinks Sam is up to the task in leading the Avengers against Kang the Conqueror this Marvel Phase 5.
“Sam is the only character without superpowers. He’s just a regular dude hanging out with a bunch of weirdos.” Mackie said in a recent interview with Empire Magazine, “Being from New Orleans, I’ve been in a few fights. And heart and charisma never helped me in a fight. That usually just got me beat up. So that might cause an issue when you go fight somebody like Thanos.”
Mackie is right about one thing: Sam is potentially going to lead the Avengers (just as Steve Rogers had but) without superpowers. But he does have his fancy Falcon gadgets which sets him apart from the former Captain in serving the world.
Despite Mackie’s seemingly pessimistic take on his character not having superpowers, there are plenty of other Avengers heroes that didn’t have powers, and yet saved the world together as they formed the team surrounded with a common goal and morals to keep.

As of now, the Avengers set to face the Multiverse Saga remains unclear, just with previous reports and rumors of Shang-Chi and the new Black Panther colliding with the new Captain America, and possibly, Spider-Man in the upcoming Avengers films.
While the MCU’s future Avengers team has yet to be unveiled and established, Sam Wilson continues his phase as the new Captain America in Captain America: New World Order, wherein he is expected to face off with Harrison Ford’s President Thunderbolt Ross. Maybe this ought to answer the question on whether Sam can lead the Avengers.
Captain America: New World Order is currently slated for its theatrical release on May 3, 2024.
