Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal of Iron Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe not only gave him his redemption story in Hollywood, but it turned the already decorated actor into a global phenomenon.

A lot of people (myself included) were heartbroken to see him bid the billion-dollar franchise farewell but one thing's for sure, even if he's no longer part of the MCU, the legacy he left will never be tainted nor topped by anyone. I can even dare say that no other actor could ever surpass his portrayal of the character even if they tried.

However, The Sunday Times posted a controversial tweet that infuriated the entire MCU fandom. In a follow-up tweet about their feature on Matt Damon and how he's the last true "leading man" in Hollywood, the news website said that Downey can easily be replaced as Iron Man, stating that any actor with wit could take on the role.

Naturally, hardcore fans of the franchise weren't having any of The Sunday Times' controversial opinions and took to Twitter to lambast the news site. Iron Man even trended on Twitter as fans rally behind Downey who in their book is irreplaceable. Check out the reactions here:

Hollywood is no stranger to doing remakes and through the years, we've seen several franchises get a fresh new start by casting a different actor on an iconic role. However, I don't think anyone can hold a candle to RDJ's iconic performance as Iron Man and even if Marvel attempted to reboot the franchise, Downey's portrayal of Tony Stark will be so hard to top.

Meanwhile, Robert Downey Jr.'s latest project Sweet Tooth is streaming on Netflix.
