Max Landis Explains Why He Did Not Like Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Warning: Spoilers for Star Wars: The Force Awakens ahead.

Max Landis, the screenwriter of American Ultra, Chronicle, and Victor Frankenstein, criticized J.J. Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens for having a "Mary Sue" lead character, Rey (Daisy Ridley). A "Mary Sue" is a term used to describe a young or low-rank person who saves the day through extraordinary abilities, and I have to agree with Landis with this one. As much as I enjoyed the cinematic experience of seeing a female lead kick ass and use a lightsaber, her character fits of a description of a "Mary Sue".

Landis released a video in which he tries to explains his criticisms, mainly about Rey being a "Mary Sue", and how a lot of fans called him a sexist for using that term. He also talks about Finn's lack of depth, comparing his character to Lando from The Empire Strikes Back

Landis clarified that he's not trying to change anyone's opinions about the film. Everyone's entitled to their own opinions, and I think Landis made a great point worth thinking about. I enjoyed the film and I'd probably watch it again, but I have to admit its flaws such as Rey being a "Mary Sue" character. Hopefully, Episode VIII will show character development that would justify her overpowered tendencies. So what do you think about this video? Do you agree with Landis about Rey being a Mary Sue?
