Marvel Writer Reveals Scrapped Alternate Plot for Tom Hardy's Venom in Spider-Man No Way Home

There were some rumors back in 2020 that Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock and Venom would arrive in Tom Holland's Spider-Man: No Way Home. And in Hardy's Venom sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, a post-credit scene reveals Eddie Brock was transported to Holland's Spider-Man MCU universe, solidifying rumors that Eddie Brock and Peter Parker will finally crossover in No Way Home.

However, when Spider-Man: No Way Home premiered in theaters, even Eddie Brock's shadow wasn't seen in the film. Not until No Way Home's post-credit scene reveals Eddie Brock transported back to his original universe, only leaving a tiny piece of the symbiote in Parker's universe, teasing a future crossover in the future.

Now, Spider-Man: No Way Home co-writer Chris McKenna revealed an alternate version of the plot where Eddie Brock's Venom had a more prominent role.

In an interview with Empire, co-writer Chris McKenna explained the alternate version of the movie, where Eddie Brock shows up earlier. McKenna explained,

“So Eddie Brock makes it to the MCU but he never makes it out of a bar. But there were versions where he shows up earlier."

McKenna went on to explain that they had attempted to integrate Venom into the final battle at the Statue of Liberty, "We were going to try to have him show up at the Statue of Liberty [for the final fight], and we were even toying with having him stuck in the Lincoln Tunnel."

However, McKenna and Erik Sommers no longer expanded on why Venom's role was so limited.

Every fan is already anticipating the Spider-Man-Venom crossover, and if No Way Home made it happen, it would totally surprise the fans. Given the impressive three-generation reunition of three Peter Parkers and the return of several classic Spider-Man villains, the inclusion of Tom Hardy's Venom will definitely add more hype to the film.

However, post-credit scenes from both No Way Home and Venom: Let There Be Carnage hint at a future crossover between the two, especially now that a tiny piece of Brock's symbiote was left in Parker's universe. It wouldn't be surprising at all if the next MCU project integrates Spider-Man with Venom. With both Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers scrapping the initial version of Venom's arrival, the reason might be because it's not yet the perfect time to introduce Venom to Holland's expanding Spider-Verse.

Spider-Man: No Way Home is now available for digital streaming.
