Marvel Studios Never Considered Any Human Characters For Thor: Ragnarok

Marvel fans might have been a bit surprised that Marvel decided to ditch Jane (Natalie Portman) in Thor: Ragnarok but it seems like the studio wasn't even considering any of the franchise's human characters for the film.

Speaking in an interview with Cinemablend, Ragnarok screenwriter Eric Pearson admitted that Marvel Studios never really talked about having Jane, Darcy (Kat Dennings) or Dr. Erik Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) appear in Thor's third film installment. Though the studio did have a checklist of story points they wanted in Taika Waititi's superhero space buddy movie, they never really forced Pearson to bring any of the Thor franchise's Earthly characters into Ragnarok.

"No. No, they never did. This is such a different one, and Sakaar and the Hulk take up so much time. Sakaar is crazy enough on its own. If you brush by it... people probably already think it's verging on too crazy. So, if you were to just gloss over that, then I think that people would have been bothered or not enjoyed it as much. So, we only had so much real estate -- plus the introduction of Valkyrie, who I think really came together as a fantastic supporting character. Tessa was so great."

Fitting in Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Sakaar and the Planet Hulk storyline left the film with so little time to bring in Jane or any other earthly character into the movie. Besides, it seems like Waititi wanted to drop the cloying romance Thor had with Dr. Foster, and what better way to do it than by dropping her and her friends all together.

Thor: Ragnarok premieres November 3, 2017.
