There's no denying that the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe community has embraced the franchise's new Captain America with arms wide open and now, fans are eagerly waiting to see what the future holds for Sam Wilson now that he has taken over the role as the Star-Spangled Avenger.
The finale of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier gave us a taste of what Sam is capable of as Cap and it definitely exceeded expectations. But did you know that apart from his awesome suit created with Wakandan technology, he nearly had a major shield upgrade?
In the book, Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: The Art of the Series (via The Direct), development concept illustrator Wesley Burt revealed that Sam's Captain America shield would have undergone some major tweaks and also featured state-of-the-art Wakandan technology.
Burt explains: "Ryan [Meinerding] asked some of the [Visual Development] department to take a little bit of time and think up some new ways that Sam could use the shield, more specific to him and his own physicality with it… when I was thinking about the tech rim piece, I was looking for a way to minimally add an element to the shield so as not to distract too much from the shield itself but still make it feel like it could have a believable tech addition and hint at the Wakandan upgrades before you see them used."

I totally get why Marvel ultimately scrapped the idea of giving the new Captain America an advanced shield because it would've been too much. On the other hand, I'm in favor of Sam getting the upgrade because, unlike Steve, he doesn't rely on the super-soldier serum and could definitely use all that Wakandan tech to his advantage.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is streaming on Disney+. Meanwhile, a fourth Captain America film is in the works.
