There's been an ongoing argument within Hollywood whether or not the success of comic book films is badly affecting movies and cinema in general and it's been the subject of debate amongst fans and critics. It all began when filmmaker Martin Scorsese said in 2019 that he doesn't consider superhero films as "cinema", a comment that set the entire film industry on fire.

Now, another respected filmmaker is airing his sentiments regarding superhero films and he has some choice words for the Marvel Cinematic Universe in particular. Denis Villeneuve, the director of the upcoming Dune remake criticized Marvel films for following the exact same formula over and over again.

Naturally, fans of the franchise weren't having any of Villeneuve's controversial statements and they took matters into their own hands by lambasting the director on Twitter. However, instead of gaining sympathy from other fans, everything quickly backfired the MCU diehards were heavily criticized for reacting the way they did. Check out some of the reactions here:

I mean, guys like Scorsese and Villeneuve have every right in the world to air their sentiments regarding the genre and whether fans would like to admit it or not, I believe that the things they say absolutely hold merit. However, they really can't fault such films if moviegoers tend to choose them over other genres. That's just how things are and over the last decade, we've proven that comic book cinema isn't just a trend and it may end up outliving all of us, as silly as that sounds.

Meanwhile, Dune is scheduled to premiere in theaters and on HBO Max on October 22, 2021.
