While Captain America: Civil War introduced us to two new heroes that we'll be seeing in future Marvel Cinematic Universe films, there's still one superhero we still haven't gotten acquainted to – Captain Marvel.
The female hero's solo film is slated for release near the end of Phase Three of the MCU, but we still don't know much about what the studios have planned for it. However, it appears like Captain Marvel is now in the works, and Marvel has decided to kick things off with working on who to hire as the film's director.
According to We Got This Covered, Marvel is eyeing independent film director Elizabeth Wood to helm its first ever female superhero movie. Wood, who directed the Sundance Film Festival award winning film White Girl, reportedly met with Marvel last week for discussions about potentially directing Captain Marvel.
The choice might seem unlikely, but it isn't really a surprising move from the studios, who also hired tapped Taika Waititi for Thor: Ragnarok. The filmmaker from New Zealand isn't as experienced in helming comic book films as compared to the likes of the Russo brothers and James Gunn. The move is actually looks pretty strategic considering Marvel films have had issues with diversity, most recently its casting of Doctor Strange's the Ancient One.
For this reason, Captain Marvel is a very significant film for the studio. Aside from being the first superhero/comic book film to feature a female character in the lead, it comes two years after DC's own female-led superhero film, Wonder Woman.
Hopefully, Marvel will find the right team for Captain Marvel and finally allay fans and critics on those diversity issues.
The movie is slated for release on March 8, 2019.
