Marvel Confirms Future Captain America as a Woman

Marvel might be passing on the Captain America mantle to Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) now that Avengers: Endgame's closed the final chapter on Steve Roger's (Chris Evans) story in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it looks like the comics have decided to give Captain America's name to a woman instead.

Marvel Comics just recently celebrated its 80th anniversary and instead of looking into past history, the publication decided to look 80 years into the future (via ComicBook.com). Marvel 2099 started with Spider-Man 2099 which sent Miguel O'Hara to Marvel Universe's present-day where he confirmed the identity of Marvel's new Captain America – a woman named Roberta Mendez.

Though it's yet to be confirmed, ComicBook.com assumes that the Marvel 2099 event exists in a future timeline in the same realm of the Earth 616 dimension where the main Marvel Universe exists.

This means that this is the first time that Earth-616 gets a female Captain America.

Of course, avid Marvel comic book readers know that female Captain America's are common in other dimensions. Danielle Cage took on the mantel as future Captain America in Earth-15061. There are others as well.

Little is known about Roberta Mendez, but we expect Marvel to reveal more about the future female Captain America as the Marvel 2099 event continues. In the series, Mendez and the future heroes of the Marvel Universe are going to need some help in a period of chaos. We can't wait to see how present-day heroes can help in the future Marvel timeline.

Are you excited to see Roberta Mendez take on the Captain America role? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section below.

Avengers: Endgame is available on Digital HD, Blu-Ray, and DVD.
