Longtime fans of the X-Men universe are well aware of the history between Mystique and Nightcrawler. For years, fans were under the credence that the shape-shifting mutant and the demon Azazel were Kurt Wagner's biological parents.
Now, it appears that it's only partially true and in the most X-Men way possible, it was revealed that Azazel was never in the picture to begin with. Well, at least the "real" demon himself.
If that doesn't sound confusing enough, the latest X-Men comic confirms that Mystique is actually Nightcrawler's biological father. What?!

X-Men: Mystique is Nightcrawler's... Father?!
X-Men Blue: Origins #1 revealed a long-standing secret Mystique has been keeping from her son. In the comic, she confesses that Azazel isn't actually Kurt's father and that she shape-shifted to impregnate Destiny who is now revealed to be Nightcrawler's biological mother.
Mystique also revealed that while Azazel isn't exactly Kurt's father, she used the demon's genetic code for her transformation so there's still a genetic connection between them.
What's even more shocking is that fans are completely behind the retcon. Well, simply because they've been shipping Mystique and Destiny for years. Interestingly, the entire idea, as crazy as it may sound was apparently conceived by longtime X-Men writer Chris Claremont back in the '80s although it never came to fruition until now.

The thing about retcons is they can be a hit-and-miss with fans but thankfully, this one was welcomed by the fandom with open arms. Now, it remains to be seen if this new "origin" for Nightcrawler will make it to the MCU, assuming he or Mystique becomes part of it in the near future but considering the impact it's already made, we wouldn't be surprised.
