While Peter Parker made his debut as Spider-Man over 50 years ago, another young wall-crawler named Miles Morales quickly became a pop culture icon, growing popularity even beyond the comic books. However, Marvel Comics actually considered stripping the character off his Spider-Man title once.

In a recent interview with Business Insider, former Marvel editor Charles Beacham talked about the publisher's initial plan for Miles Morales, confirming the initial decision to be in favor of a nickname instead of the character sharing the Spider-Man title with Peter Parker.

"It would have made him less important," Beacham said. "He becomes Spider-Man with an asterisk. It takes away the power for kids who relate to this character."

That said, there are currently no plans to give Miles Morales a new name, but Marvel does discuss status quo changes for its top characters. Beacham added that he was glad Morales got to continue being Spider-Man.

Back in 2018, there were rumors that the publisher was planning on changing Miles Morales' codename to Spy-D instead of Spider-Man. This was allegedly set to take place in writer Brian Michael Bendis' final story arc on Spider-Man in that year. After signing a contract with DC, Bendis has to bring his Marvel stories to an end, including that of Miles' story. Hence, the character began questioning his role as the wall-crawler, with fans speculating that he'd spend less time as the hero. However, a new Spider-Man series from writer Saladin Ahmed and artist Javier Garron was launched following Bendis' exit, leaving some subplots from Bendis' story unsolved.

Miles Morales is expected to make his return on the big screen in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2, set for release on October 7, 2022.
