There's no doubt that Marvel is making huge strides for representation with their projects. Kevin Feige, the studio's president, has been a part of the success of features such as Captain Marvel and Black Panther. As it turns out, Feige even almost left Marvel over lack of diversity.
In a recent interview with Independent, Hulk actor Mark Ruffalo revealed why Feige almost quit from the studio. "When we did the first Avengers, Kevin Feige told me, ‘Listen, I might not be here tomorrow,'" he said, revealing that Feige was going to talk to Disney to discuss the lack of female superhero movies. "And he's like, ‘Ike [Isaac Perlmutter, Disney's largest shareholder at the time] does not believe that anyone will go to a female-starring superhero movie. So if I am still here tomorrow, you will know that I won that battle.'"
"That was the turning point for Marvel," Ruffalo continued, this is because Feige wanted black superheroes, female superheroes, and LGBT superheroes. "He changed the whole Marvel universe."
"We now have a gay superhero on the way, we have black superheroes, we have female superheroes – Scarlett Johansson has her movie coming out, we have Captain Marvel, they are doing She-Hulk next," the actor added. Ruffalo says there's no other studio being "that forwardly inclusive on that level," but points out that they have to. "This is the f***ing world. The culture is way ahead of politics."
The studio could have gone in a whole other direction with Marvel if Feige did actually quit. Fortunately, he fought for having representation within the films and is truly one of the main reasons for the success of the studio.
Black Widow is set for release on May 1, 2020.
