Mark Hamill was Convinced to do The Mandalorian Cameo Because of Baby Yoda

A few months have passed since The Mandalorian Season 2's grand finale and Star Wars fans are still buzzing about the triumphant return of Luke Skywalker in a galaxy far, far away. The goosebumps-inducing episode was a love letter to the fans of the Jedi Master and it pretty hinted that he'll be one of MandoVerse's central characters moving forward. However, it turns out that Mark Hamill wasn't always down to do the part and it took some convincing before he accepted the role.

In the new episode of Disney Gallery which chronicles Hamill's epic Star Wars comeback, the legendary actor said that the thing that convinced him to accept the cameo offer was none other than Baby Yoda himself. Recalling how it all came to be, Season 2 finale director Peyton Reed along with creator Jon Favreau paid Hamill a visit in December 2019 to talk about the plan.

Reed said: "Over the holidays — this would've been December 2019 — Jon and I drove up together to Mark's house. We brought the script and we brought Luke Skywalker's wardrobe and we brought Grogu with us. Mark was so gracious. We came in, Jon and I sat with Mark's wife as he was in his office reading the script in real-time. So, we were on pins and needles because it wasn't necessarily a given that he was gonna be interested. I think he's very protective of this character, and rightfully so. He came out and he was thrilled — and I think a huge weight was lifted off of Jon's shoulders when that happened."

Turns out that even the great Mark Hamill himself couldn't resist the charm of Baby Yoda and quite frankly, I can't fault him for it. Meanwhile, it's almost safe to say that Skywalker will be appearing in future episodes of The Mandalorian or his own spinoff show even but don't count on Hamill reprising the role full-time. If anything, his cameo in the finale pretty much serves as his "physical" farewell to the franchise.

Meanwhile, The Mandalorian Season 3 is expected to begin production this September.
