Mark Hamill Teases The Meaning of Star Wars: The Last Jedi Title

When the official title of Star Wars: Episode VIIIwas revealed to be Star Wars: The Last Jedi, many fans began speculating what the title actually means. Who is "The Last Jedi"? And does "Jedi" here apply to one person or more? You can already find a bunch of theories and reactions about the title online. One of the most interesting reactions we've seen is Luke Skywalker himself, Mark Hamill. You can watch his reaction here. Hamill shared his thoughts again during Sundance while promoting his film Brigsby Bear. During an interview with Uproxx at the film festival, of course, he was asked about Star Wars, and it sounds like he likes how the title is making fans speculate about its meaning. He said:

"I think it's very ambiguous. Is the last Jedi Leia? Is it me? Is it someone we've never met before? Or is it Rey? Because she seems to have the Force as well. So we'll all wait and see."

Hamill was surprised about the title - which he found out early in the production of Star Wars: The Last Jedi because it's the "actual phrase is in the crawl for Episode VII," referring to the first four lines in the beginning of The Force Awakens. "By the way, when you read The Force Awakens script, the very first two words are, 'Luke Skywalker has vanished.' Ooh, baby, this is going to be good! I'm going to have a great part! But down later in the crawl, and I can't quote it exactly, I saw on Twitter this morning, 'until Skywalker, the last Jedi, is destroyed.' I thought, well, I didn't know that! I've only seen it twice – VII, I mean. And I was wondering why they would use that phrase if it was used that way, because it specifies me. And I think it's very ambiguous. Is the last Jedi Leia? Is it me?"

Many fans are saying that Luke Skywalker will probably die in The Last Jedi because of what they think the title implies, and how it might be referring to him, but what about Rey? Over the years, fans have debated over whether Return of the Jedi refers to Anakin Skywalker being redeemed or Luke Skywalker becoming a Jedi knight, so it's possible that The Last Jedi could have more than one meaning.
