Mark Hamill Takes Back The “Fundamental” Disagreement With The Last Jedi Director

Star Wars:The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson has been trying his best to create a unique and authentic story for the next sequel trilogy installment, changing the traditional yellow Star Wars logo to red and promising a film different from the rest in the Star Wars saga.

Last month, Hamill revealed that he had reacted quite strongly to Johnson's decisions, saying that he had told the director he "fundamentally disagree(s) with every choice you've made" for Luke Skywalker. Though the Star Wars legend tried to tone it down by praising Johnson for his efforts in making a great The Force Awakens sequel, his statement has caused quite a stir amongst fans, and now he wants to take it back.

Speaking in an interview with Variety during the Tony Awards, Hamill clarified his statement regarding the disagreement he had with Johnson about Luke.

"Listen Rian Johnson is an amazing filmmaker. And if you look at Brick, or Brothers Bloom, or Looper, each film is different from the last one and they're so inventive. And I think people will be really pleased and surprised, I know I was. I got into trouble because… I was quoted as saying to Rian that I fundamentally disagree with everything you decided about Luke, and it was inartfully [sic] phrased. What I was, was surprised at how he saw Luke. And it took me a while to get around to his way of thinking, but once I was there it was a thrilling experience. I hope it will be for the audience too."

Playing Luke Skywalker for decades, it's no surprise that Hamill might be a little bit protective of his character. Given his reaction to Johnson's changes, it seems like the director really is taking down fans down an unfamiliar road – one that we hope everyone will enjoy.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits cinemas on Dec. 15, 2017.
