Mark Hamill Says The Last Jedi’s Story “Isn’t About Luke Anymore”

Star Wars fans might be hoping to see Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) pick up his lightsaber again in The Last Jedi, however it seems like the Jedi Master won't have the most integral role in the upcoming sequel trilogy installment.

Speaking in an interview with The Vancouver Sun,Star Wars Legend Mark Hamill revealed that while the original trilogy stars have been appearing in Lucasfilm's new line of Star Wars movies, the films are more focused on the sequel trilogy's new generation of villains and heroes.

"[I]t's not about us anymore. In this new one, I was saying to [writer/director] Rian Johnson: I need to know my backstory. It was kind of unclear. You read where he is now and what he's doing now and sort of have to fill in the blanks for yourself. So I did do a backstory myself. It's not about Luke anymore, so it's not really important. But I had to make sense of it for myself."

Of course, this doesn't mean that Luke's role would be less significant. It's just likely that the film would focus more on Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaacs) and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver).

Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits cinemas December 15, 2017.
