Mark Hamill Originally Wanted Luke Skywalker to Turn to the Dark Side in Star Wars Return of the Jedi

Luke Skywalker might be the hero of the Star Wars original trilogy, however, it seems like Mark Hamill wanted a different path for the Jedi.

Speaking in an interview with Entertainment Weekly on the SiriusXM station to promote his role in the second season of Taika Waititi's What We Do In The Shadows, Hamill decided to reveal a few surprising Star Wars secrets – the Star Wars legend originally wanted Luke Skywalker to turn to the Dark Side in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi.

According to Hamill, he thought that the ending of The Return of the Jedi was so predictable and boring that he wanted something entirely different for Luke.

"I remember complaining to George [Lucas] about something in Revenge of the Jedi, and I said, 'It's so predictable and pat,' and he said, 'Mark, don't forget. These things were made for children,'" Hamill told the entertainment news outlet.

Lucas may have thought of a similar idea, however, it seems like the Star Wars creator wanted to stick with his ending for The Return of the Jedi knowing that he made Star Wars for children.

"His original intention was to make movies for, you know, kids! Adolescents and younger," the Star Wars legend reiterated in his interview with Sirius XM.

While Luke never really did turn to the Dark Side, fans did get to see Luke head down a dark path in Disney's Star Wars sequel trilogy. Disappointed in himself when his actions sealed Ben Solo's path to the Dark Side, Luke cuts himself off from the Force, hiding away like a hermit in Ahch-To.

Sure, hermit Luke might not be the same as Dark Side Luke, but there's still a shade of grey there.

The entire Skywalker Saga is available for streaming on Disney+.
