In the 2016 film Suicide Squad, fans met Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn who is basically head over heels to Jared Leto's Joker. With a very toxic and unhealthy relationship, the upcoming film Birds of Prey will follow Quinn after her break-up with the Clown Prince of Crime, and it seems like she's better than ever.
In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, Robbie got more in-depth with her character's break-up with the Joker. "She's trying to own it," she said. The actor thinks it "felt like a real way to deal with a break-up," where it isn't exactly "clean" and "easy" to be a strong woman.
As Robbie puts it, Quinn is "a bit more Courtney Love than Debbie Hary" in the upcoming movie. Her character is basically saying that she's single, she doesn't need Joker, "f**k that guy." However, if the Joker would ever text her, she would "run" and would just "fall to pieces."
In addition, according to director Cathy Yan, despite Quinn's strength, she could still be "easily manipulated." She has a "really low self-esteem," and add the fact that Joker has "brought out" some issues within her too. Yan also said the movie would be a great way to "explore the woman behind Harley Quinn" as well as being able to learn more about her "duality."
Based on Robbie's comments, it seems like Quinn is still torn. Despite being sure of completely moving on from Joker, she isn't quite sure of herself, especially with her low self-esteem and her still being very vulnerable.
Needless to say, fans are very much curious and excited to see how the movie will tackle her process of completely forgetting about Joker and embracing her strength.
Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is slated for release on February 7, 2020
