MAPPA is probably the most talked-about anime studio right now, for better or for worse. Aside from getting a lot of praise for its works, MAPPA is once again embroiled in another controversy as reports suggest that the studio is silencing staff from speaking about working conditions.

Several posts on X (formerly Twitter) report that MAPPA asked staff members to sign a confidentiality contract that forbids them from talking about the working conditions of projects.

This is not the first time that MAPPA has been in hot water as the studio has been accused of poor working conditions before.

MAPPA is a notable anime studio that has worked on lots of hit titles over the years. The studio is best known for working on hits like Attack on Titan: The Final Season, Chainsaw Man, and Jujutsu Kaisen.

The studio has been praised for its impressive animated sequences for the titles that they have worked on, but they’ve also been at the receiving end of complaints from workers.

For instance, MAPPA has been accused before of low pay for its animators as well as overworking staff members. These have been reported on sites such as Sakugabooru.

The reason for this is said to be MAPPA working on several shows at the same time. Just this year, MAPPA has already worked on five anime titles.

Along with potential workplace issues, some anime fans have also complained about the uneven animation quality of some titles like Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku and Attack on Titan: The Final Season.

During the Summer 23 season, it seemed that many anime fans were happy with MAPPA’s focus on Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2. Now, it seems that opinions on the studio have soured once again.

This is because a post on X about MAPPA’s supposed confidentiality contract got a lot of attention, but this post is unsubstantiated so far.

There are other posts with similar information though. Full Frontal also shared on X that a certain anime studio is forbidding animators from discussing workplace conditions.

No studio was named in the post, though the report lines up with the accusation against MAPPA.

For now, there’s no official word on a MAPPA confidentiality contract for animators, so you may want to take these reports with a grain of salt.

Given the previous issues with MAPPA though, it’s likely that discussion about the studio’s practices will continue.
