While there were concerns about the show’s profitability, MAPPA recently confirmed that the Chainsaw Man anime was a financial success despite reports of its low Blu-ray and DVD sales.

Chainsaw Man being a success is important because MAPPA invested 100% of the show’s production costs instead of having other production companies bring in the funding.

This is also good news for many fans as it will likely mean that a second season will be announced soon.

There’s no doubt that Chainsaw Man was one of the most-watched shows of the Fall 22 season, though many were concerned about the series’ success after reports of its low Blu-ray sales surfaced.

Early this year, it was reported that the Chainsaw Man Volume 1 Blu-ray only sold 1,735 copies in its first week. Subsequent reports revealed that the other volumes also did not do well.

For comparison, the other big Fall 22 anime Bocchi the Rock! was a huge hit as its first Blu-ray volume sold over 20,000 copies just after a week.

Blu-ray sales aren’t the only metric of an anime’s success, but it is widely believed that strong Blu-ray sales are necessary for an anime to be renewed for another season.

Of course, that’s not true for all shows as anime like Vinland Saga were renewed despite low Blu-ray sales numbers. This is because of other income streams such as TV and streaming revenues, as well as merchandise sales.

In an interview with Toyo Keizai, MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka stated that the Chainsaw Man anime is a “complete financial success.”

Otsuka revealed that this was important for MAPPA given how it is their first work of this scale to be wholly funded by the company.

Though he mentioned that the Chainsaw Man anime may not have as big of an impact as Jujutsu Kaisen, another series that the studio is working on.

Otsuka also revealed that the anime’s success came more from viewers who watched its TV and streaming release.

He further stated that he wished the anime reached more of the Blu-ray buyer crowd, indicating that the show’s home release sales weren’t as high as they had hoped.

Still, the fact that the series is a financial success bodes well for a potential second season announcement which fans are expecting to happen soon.
