Magic: The Gathering Throne of Eldraine Adventure Mechanic Explained

Magic: The Gathering's new set Throne of Eldraine is introducing a new mechanic called Adventures. Cards that use this mechanic have a story book-style text section, and as you can in "Beanstalk Giant" below, the card has "Fertile Footsteps" Sorcery - Adventure part.

Senior Designer Gavin recently talked to IGN to explain how this Throne of Eldraine mechanic works.

Speaking to IGN, Verhey explained:

"One of the really cool new mechanics in this set is called adventure. This represents how the various knights and characters of the world go out on… well, adventures! You can tell which cards are adventures from their very unique frame that looks a bit like a storybook. You can always play a card for it's normal mana cost, in the top right… Or if it's in your hand, you can pay the adventure cost and send it away on an adventure! It'll do the effect in the adventure textbox, you'll exile the card, and then you can still cast it later on. It's a great way to get extra value out of each and every one of your adventure cards!"

The Adventure mechanic is fitting for the fairy tale-themed set. They kind of remind me of split cards but with a different kind of twist. If an exiled card you own is on an adventure, you can cast the creature in any of your turns, but this works only if the Adventure spell resolves and the card remains in exile, so if the Adventure is countered, you can't cast the creature.

If you cast a spell that lets you search for a Sorcery or Instant from the deck, you won't be able to find the Adventure card.

The other mechanics in Throne of Eldraine are Food Tokens, Artifact tokens that you can sacrifice to gain 3 life. There are also cards with abilities that let you use Food Tokens to activate a different effect.

And there's Adamant, a mechanic that gives the card a bonus effect if you spend three of a particular color of mana to cast them like this card:
