Magic: The Gathering players who are caught cheating in sanctioned events usually get banned for a specified amount of time, but only a few get a lifetime ban from playing the popular trading card game. Alex Bertoncini, a player notorious for cheating multiple times in the past, was banned for life today, according to the official suspended members list.
Last year, Bertoncini was booed during the Top 8 announcement of Grand Prix Los Angeles. Bertoncini was banned twice for cheating before and many believed that he deserved a harsher punishment: a lifetime ban from the game. It looks like Wizards of the Coast are staying true to their word. Here's the statement they made about putting more effort into making sure competitive Magic is fair:
"It has always been important to us that competitive Magic is fair & honest, but we can do more. We're following the conversation & we're starting a process to work with key community members to evaluate DCI policies & tournament rules to keep Magic a leader in competitive gaming."
