Magic: The Gathering Head Designer Says Modern Horizons Will Be A 'Love Letter to The Time Spiral Block'

Wizards of the Coast

With Magic: The Gathering's new War of the Spark set almost here, many players are already looking forward to this year's innovative straight-to-Modern format set known as Modern Horizon but we'll have to wait a few more weeks before Wizards of the Coast officially reveal previews for the upcoming set. However, Magic Head Designer Mark Rosewater, who was at MagicFest London over the weekend, shared some interesting information about the concept for Modern Horizons.

During Rosewater's Q&A at MagicFest London, Rosewater reportedly dubbed Modern Horizons as Timespiral / Planar Chaos 2 in concept due to set complexity. Rosewater said that it won't be an entry-level set and it has a lot of mechanics but is described as a love letter to the Time Spiral block, MTG podcaster Emma Paltrow said.

The Time Spiral block from 2006-2007 featured complex but fun mechanics like Suspend, Echo, Buyback, Split-Second, Storm, and more so expect Modern Horizons to be a complex set not made for beginners. Wizards of the Coast still haven't announced if they will bring back any mechanics for Modern Horizons but it would be cool see mechanics like Suspend, Storm, and Morph return.

Modern Horizons will be released on June 14. Prerelease events will take place on June 8 and 9. The prerelease events will be Draft, not Sealed. Previews will begin at the end of May. The War of the Spark card set will be released on May 3, 2019. It's already available in digital version on Magic Arena.
