Magic: The Gathering Head Designer Explains Why Slivers Won't Return in Dominaria

Slivers, the unique Magic: The Gathering creatures that share a hive mind, were a memorable part of the Dominaria plane, so when the set Dominaria was announced, many were speculating them to return. After all, they returned a couple of times before in different Magic sets but according to Magic head designer Mark Rosewater, they won't be returning in the upcoming set.

When a fan asked Rosewater if we would be seeing Slivers again in the upcoming Dominaria set, Rosewater confirmed that there will be no Slivers in Dominaria, and explained why on his Blogatog post:

One of the challenges of designing Dominaria was there were so many possibilities of what to include (more expansions, for example, occurred in Dominaria than the rest of the Top 5 visited planes combined) and a limited amount of space available.
Slivers were on the short list, but were problematic in that they require a significant commitment to space and doing so would have lessened how many other references we could make, so we made the tough decision to leave them out of Dominaria.
This shouldn't be read as a sign that R&D isn't a fan of Slivers. We know how beloved they are and are committed to bring them back in the future, unfortunately not in the upcoming set.

Slivers are an all-or-nothing deal so including them would definitely leave no room to feature other themes of Dominaria that players miss. I wouldn't be surprised if they release some in the upcoming Core Set 2019 though.

Would you like to see Slivers return soon?
