Magic: The Gathering Head Designer Confirms The Return of Snow Mechanics is Inevitable

Wizards of the Coast

In 1995, Magic: The Gathering introduced a supertype known as Snow in the Ice Age set, and it was usually tied to snow mana costs. The 2006 Magic set Coldsnap may not be considered great but the set's snow mechanics were fun to play. Cards like Scrying sheets saw a good amount of play, and it's still being used in Skred Red decks in the Modern format.

Now, the Magic head designer has confirmed that the return of snow mechanics is inevitable in a future supplemental set.

When a fan asked the possibility of bringing back the Snow mechanics, Rosewater responded on his Blogatog, "Supplemental set? When. Standard-legal set? If."

It would be cool to see them bring back Snow mechanics in future supplemental Magic sets but I would rather see them return in Standard-legal sets. However, back in 2017, Rosewater said that they're highly skeptical if they would reprint snow-covered basic lands in a Standard-legal set.
