Magic: The Gathering Head Designer Confirms That Guilds of Ravnica Will Only Have 2 New Planeswalkers

Wizards of the Coast

Over the weekend, Wizards of the Coast revealed that Guilds of Ravnica will give players a chance to get Mythic Editions of iconic Planeswalkers in booster packs but not all seven of them will be Standard legal, so now, fans are wondering how many new Planeswalkers will the upcoming Magic: The Gathering set have.

According to Magic's Head Designer Mark Rosewater, the answer is two. "Yes, there are only two in the booster packs," Rosewater responded to a fan's question on his Blogatog. The two Planeswalkers will be Ral, Izzet Viceroy and a still unrevealed Vraska Planeswalker card.

Here's Ral, Izzet Viceroy:

It's safe to assume that Vraska is the other Planeswalker in Guilds of Ravnica because she is the cover character of the set. On Twitter, artist Magali Villeneuve also tweeted the artwork of Vraska she did for Guilds of Ravnica.

That's a stunning piece of art! I'm not surprised that they only included two new Planeswalkers in Guilds of Ravnica. The recently-released Core Set 2019 already brought 6 new Planeswalkers in Standard so I think it's good that they're not overpopulating Standard format with a bunch of Planeswalkers. The unnamed set after Ravnica Allegiance is expected to be centered on the Gatewatch's war against Nicol Bolas so that set will most likely have more Planeswalker cards.

Guilds of Ravnica will feature five guilds: Selesnya (green-white), Boros (red-white), Golgari (black-green), Izzet (blue-red), and Dimir (blue-black).

The following set, Ravnica Allegiance will feature the other five guilds: Azorius (blue-white), Rakdos (black-red), Gruul (red-green), Simic (green-blue), and Orzhov (black-white).

Guilds of Ravnica will be released on October 5.
